About

At Champlain Orchards, we aim to produce the best-tasting apples possible, and to take good care of the earth while we're at it. Located on a beautiful hilltop in the Champlain Valley, we grow more than 25 varieties of apples, plums, cherries and raspberries, press our own fresh, sweet cider, and hand make delicious products such as apple pies, apple butter and applesauce right here on the farm.

This land produces a fine apple. Our proximity to Lake Champlain buffers the weather, our hills provide excellent drainage, and the mix of stony loam and clay soils that you find here in Addison County are ideal for our trees' root systems. My neighbors and I have worked with The Vermont Land Trust to permanently conserve these orchards and the surrounding farmland.

I purchased and began farming this land when I was 27 and have worked with other Shoreham growers to learn the subtleties of this trade. Gradually, you come to know how to get honey bees to pollinate just the right number of blossoms, how to protect the fruit when you sense a storm coming in the middle of the night, how to prune so that sunlight penetrates to the fruiting wood, how to keep hungry mice away from the tender trunks of the sapling trees through the winter.

As a 100 year-old family-owned and operated farm, Champlain Orchards strives to preserve the best traditions of Vermont apple farming, while tapping the best of new farming advances. In this spirit, we grow both old time New England varieties such as the Northern Spy, and new delicious flavors such as Honeycrisp and Zesta. Similarly, we care for the land and the trees in many ways that date back to the first American settlers, but also practice integrated pest management, have a transitional organic orchard, and take a thoughtful, forward-thinking approach to growing safe apples and being excellent stewards of this land.

During the Fall, Champlain Orchards apples, cider, pies, apple butter and applesauce are available at our farm stand along with an abundant supply of fresh squash, pumpkins, fruit pies and locally grown produce, including products such as dilly beans and sauerkraut. We also deliver our apples to Vermont grocery stores, natural food markets, restaurants and farm stands. Apples can also be shipped across the United States through our Online Store.

Best of all - every one of our apple varieties is available (straight off the tree!) in our pick your own orchard. Cider (fresh off the press!) is available at our Cider Mill. Pies are available at our Farm Market, fresh from our Bakery. Come visit us on the farm - we will give you a warm welcome!
