About

A future food system throughout the mountains of North Carolina and the Southern Appalachians that provides a safe and nutritious food supply for all segments of society; that is produced, marketed and distributed in a manner that enhances human and environmental health; and that adds economic and social value to rural and urban communities. ASAP Mission

Collaboratively create and expand regional community based and integrated food systems that are locally owned and controlled, environmentally sound, economically viable, and health-promoting. What is Appalachian Grown?

Appalachian Grown is a program that certifies food and agricultural products grown or raised on farms in Western North Carolina and the southern Appalachian Mountains. Displayed with food and farm products, the Appalachian Grown label readily identifies local agricultural products and helps consumers make informed buying choices that will benefit the farms of Appalachia and our local economy.

What are the goals of the program?

In its mission to support Appalachian farms and rebuild a community-based food system, ASAP developed the Appalachian Grown program to expand local markets for Appalachian farms and to provide a way the public can easily identify products from local farms.

Who can participate in the program?

The Appalachian Grown program incorporates Appalachian farmers, retailers of local food and farm products, and consumers. Buy Appalachian and brand your products.

Why do I want to buy a product with the Appalachian Grown logo?

When you buy food or a farm product with the Appalachian Grown label you are getting a product that was grown or raised in our region by a local farmer. What does this mean? It means that you are buying a product that is fresher, better tasting, and more nutritious. It means that you are supporting a local food system that contributes to the local economy, that is better for the environment, preserves the farming heritage of Appalachia, and protects our mountain landscape.

On average, our food today travels 1500 miles from seed to plate. This distance translates into a loss of freshness and nutrition and into a loss of control over the way our food is produced. Food that is grown to travel thousands of miles is bred to hold up over distances and time and not for taste. Long distance transport consumes nonrenewable fossil fuels. This distance also means we don’t know the people that grow our food or have any knowledge about their production and business practices. If we no longer know our farmers, we have less control over the way our food is grown and over the kind of environmental and social impacts of food production.

How is the logo protected?

The Appalachian Grown™ label is a trademark of Appalachian Sustainable Agriculture Project.
